 Breast Reduction

Indications:

*Large, heavy breasts which may be the cause of breathing difficulties, back, shoulder and neck pain; poor posture; bra strap indentations in shoulders.

*Excessive breast size which deprives the patient of self-confidence and attractiveness,

*One breast is noticeably larger than the other.

Procedure description:

*The procedure is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis.

*Incisions are made around the pigmented area (nipple/areola complex) and extended vertically below the nipple and the fold under the breast. The nipple/areola complex is repositioned upward, excess breast tissue, fat and skin is removed. A new breast contour is created.

Recuperation and Healing:

*The incisions are covered with light dressings for several days. A soft supportive bra is worn for several weeks.

*Initial discomfort gradually subsides over time and can be controlled with medication.

*Scars normally fade in six to eighteen months.

*Surgery may or may not affect the patient's ability to breast feed.

Intended Result:

*A more attractive breast contour which is better proportioned for the patient's body.

Insurance Guidelines:

*The procedure is usually covered either fully or partially by insurance if the patient's breasts are reduced by a certain weight standard.

NOTE: The specifics, risks, and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can only be determined through a consultation with the plastic surgeon
